May 13, 1838:
Death of Zachary Macaulay. He was a member of the Society for the Mitigation and Gradual Abolition of Slavery. He was appointed Governor of the Province of Freedom from March 1794 – 6 May 1795 and again from March 1796 – April 1799. The Province of Freedom was founded to provide a home for slaves who had fled from slavery in the USA. The Province was subsequently renamed the Colony of Sierra Leone.
